Deepika Padukone was born on January 5, 1986 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her parents speak Konkani. Her dad is a former Badminton player of international repute, her mother is a travel agent, and Deepika Padukone's younger sister, Anisha, is a golfer. When Deepika Padukone was a year old, her family relocated to Bangalore. Padukone has admitted to being socially awkward as a child, and did not have many friends. The focus of her life was badminton, which she played competitively from a young age.

Early in her career, Padukone gained recognition with a television commercial for the soap Liril, and modeled for various other brands and products. In 2005, she made her runway debut at the Lakme Fashion Week for designer Suneet Varma, and won the "Model of the Year" award at the Kingfisher Fashion Awards. Deepika appeared in Himesh Reshammiya's music video for the song "Naam Hai Tera"in the album "Aap Ka Surroor" in 2006. Farah Khan noticed her in the music video and decided to cast her in her movie Om Shanti Om. Om Shanti Om was released on 9 November 2007 to universal acclaim from critics and record-breaking box office collections. It grossed INR1.50 billion worldwide and thus became the highest-grossing Hindi film at the time of its release. She carefully selected roles post the success of Om Shanti Om. She was appreciated for her role in Cocktail, Love Aaj Kal, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Raam Leela. She also did some off-beat movies like Piku and Finding Fanny and received widespread appreciation for her role. She has now become the favorite actress for director Sanjay Leela Bhansali who has casted her back to back in 3 movies, Raam Leela, Bajira Mastani and Padmawati.
