Bad Genius, Thai movie is about an intelligent girl with a handful of friends who are struggling with their exams. Lynn is a daughter of a rural school teacher who has problems with finance but who still manages to send his only daughter to a prestigious school. With the benevolent intention of helping her father with their financial problems, Lynn devises various ways of channeling answers for her friends during exams in return for a handsome amount of money. Another thing that we can learn from this movie is that intelligence is not everything.
Cheating in school exams is an open secret. Almost everyone does it, but no one openly talks about it. Thai director Nattawut Poonpiriya came up a hip film "Bad Genius" that tackles this very sticky topic and wound up with the highest grossing film in Thailand of 2017. The story was told and edited in a very exciting way, like a heist caper. All possible thrill gimmicks were used to enhance the tension during that climactic series of events. Overall the movie is a cautionary tale against dishonesty.
Bad Genius gives away most of its plot in the trailers and at the beginning of the movie. Yet still, the film is able to sustain a nail-biting level of tension throughout. The brilliant sound design plays a big role in making it a thrilling ride. The sharp sound of a lead pencil hastily scratching against paper, and the ticking of the clock in time with a wildly thumping heartbeat accompany a frenzied score that encapsulates the anxiety and dread of taking tests.
